Biography | MA Chi-hang, MACHI
Born in Hong Kong in 1979, Ma Chi Hang receives his B.A. in Fine Arts and M.A in Philosophy from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He centres his recent years in video art and art education but not missing his touches in artist documentary and art direction for cinema. The participated film production includes July Rhapsody (2001), When Beckham Meet Owen (2004), All about Love (2010). To motivate the arts education and to raise the film literacy, he has cooperated with many cultural organisation and academic units, including School of International Communication of Normal Beijing University; Hong Kong Institute of Contemporary Culture, Hong Kong Film Culture Centre, Hong Kong Arts Centre, Robert Ho Family Foundation and HKICC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity.
As an active independent filmmaker, he develops his artistic observation onto the social phenomena which is in lack of awareness. The video project MR 221 Diary (2007, 27 mins) and Y.H.A. 30+:H K Young Artist Dialogue (2010, 95 mins) stems to explore the possibilities of video arts on documentaries, with a touch of sensitivity and empathy on the intriguing ins and outs of the generation local artists. It premieres at Hong has been shown in Hong Kong, Beijing, Singapore, Taiwan, Sweden, Finland and Norway. His two recent works, “Women Security” (2014, 25mins) and “Malinois’ Gaze” (2014, 25mins) explore the complexity faced by the local grassroot security guards, who were a marginal group suffering both psychologically in the society. Sponsored by Pure Art Foundation and LORD WILSON TRUST, his recent documentary “Fishermen Songs” (up-coming in mid 2015) preserves the fading fisherman songs in which Chinese literature, traditional custom, geographic knowledge and fisherman’s are all weaved.
